Movie Clips about Teaching

Easy A - Mr. Grifith

The clip I have chosen becomes relevant at 0:56. I have chosen this clip to represent positive learning experiences between students and teachers. This particular teacher, Mr. Grifith, was supportive, understanding, and excellent at getting his students engaged in the subject matter. To peak student's interests, Mr. Grifith would teach in a way that was not usual, such as making up a short rap about the subject they were covering, not necessarily to help the students remember information but to help them become interested in where the discussion is going. I believe this is a positive quality for a teacher to have because it is known that if a teacher spends the whole class standing at the front, speaking to the students, they are going to lose focus and interest in what they are supposed to be learning. Changing the regular teaching habits, such as walking throughout the classroom, having powerpoints or activities for students to do, and asking students for their opinions on the subject matter can get students more involved. That is exactly what Mr. Grifith did. Above being an effective teacher, he also cared deeply about his student's well being. In this clip, he confronts one of his best students about her change in behavior, attitude, and attire. He is concerned for her well-being and approaches her so she knows he is there to support her and help her in any way she needs. I believe this is what a supportive and effective teacher acts like. Mr. Grifith reminds me of my high school science teacher. He always made puns or did fun experiments to keep each student interested in what they were hearing so they would pay more attention to what he was teaching about different aspects of science.

High School Musical -Mrs. Darbus

In High School Musical, Mrs. Darbus is the drama teacher and is very eccentric.   She adores each one of her students, and while she can be harsh sometimes when students do not behave the way she wants them to, she makes each class engaging and fun. Within this movie, it generally shows Mrs. Darbus as the musical director. Some of the students have multiple have commitments, and being in a musical is not their main concern. However, she is still committed to each student, even if they are not committed to her program. Mrs. Darbus believes each student has potential, and if they work hard they can exceed it, and whatever goal they want to reach. For one student in particular, he thought he wanted to be. basketball player because that is what he grew up with his father telling him that is what he wanted. Once he becomes a part of the school musical, he realizes his passion for music, but struggles to come to terms with it. Mrs. Darbus is the one to bring it out and shows him what he really can do with his talents. She even tells an Ivey league music school about his talent so he would have somewhere to study his true passion. I believe this is what a passionate and caring teacher would do; do their best for their students to succeed and have a career in what they love.
